Fun Facts About Beta Upsilon

Every fraternity thinks they have the best; the best Intramural sports team, the best-looking group of guys, the best parties, and now, as alumni, the best stories to share. What are some fun facts you remember about Beta Upsilon? 

Take a look at some of our historical facts below:

Delta Tau Delta was the first fraternity established at the University of Illinois in 1872.

The very first student to enroll in the University was James Newton Matthews, a founding member of our chapter.

Beta Upsilon has occupied four Shelters since the 1890s. After renting a house on Green Street near 5th, the chapter moved into a new house at 301 E. John in 1912. After a fire in 1967, Delts moved to 713 W. Ohio in Urbana. In 2000, the house corporation purchased the current Shelter at 401 E. John.

The Beta Upsilon motto is, “A Long Pull, A Strong Pull, A Pull All Together!”

Three of Beta Upsilon’s most famous alumni are:

James R. Mann, U.S. Representative 1897 to 1922. House Minority Leader from 1911 to 1919. Woman’s suffrage champion and sponsor of the Mann Act of 1910.

Andy Phillip, Member of legendary Fighting Illini “Whiz Kids” team of the 1940s. College career was interrupted by service in the Marines at Iwo Jima. Went on to become a 5-time NBA All-Star.

Tim McCarthy, former United States Secret Service agent known for heroically defending President Ronald Reagan during the assassination attempt in 1981. Tim was a scholarship football player at Illinois and recently retired as Chief of Police for Orland Park, IL
