Matt Wilson ’89: A well-rounded chapter life leads to fond memories

During his time at Illinois, Matt Wilson ’89 made the most of his time in Delta Tau Delta, citing examples from all parts of chapter life.

“We were laid back guys,” Matt said, “popular with sororities and good at intramural sports, especially basketball.”

He enjoyed hanging out at Kam’s when he was in college, “especially Friday happy hour,” he joked. Good times were abundant and Matt said there were “too many funny stories to count.

“Our pledge class walkout to Madison was crazy and a lot of fun,” he said, “but my memories of it are a little foggy.

“I had a great pledge class,” Matt explained. “They were all really smart guys who were fun to be around and supportive of one another.”

Matt also enjoyed a close relationship with an older member throughout the years, dating back to his undergraduate days in the chapter. “Greg Kazarian ’84 has been my mentor and counselor since he was our chapter advisor in the 1980s.”

In addition to meaningful relationships he formed in the chapter, Matt also treasured significant experiences with Delt. “There’s one Delta Tau Delta tradition that I hope never goes away,” he said, “and that’s visiting the grave of Louis Michael Tobin 1901 during initiation week.”

What Matt is most proud of during his time in the chapter was building on the momentum that the previous classes had started. “We grew the chapter to more than 100 members and won a couple of Hugh Shields Awards for Chapter Excellence along the way. It was great to be part of a winning team.”
